There are 146 commentary points as we drive to Hana and then on to the National Park at Kipahulu. It’s just like driving around with a local expert.
Note that this tour does not have commentary on the "back side" of Haleakala. We do not provide commentary this way because most rental car companies do not allow their rentals cars to be taken on this route. So we provide all new commentary for the drive back from Hana to the Kahului Airport area.
Just download the app on Wi-Fi from your network at home, your resort or use any free Wi-Fi network. Because the app is filled with audio commentary and maps, its larger than "normal" apps. Many phone/data networks will block the download because of size - so its IMPORTANT to download over a Wi-Fi network.

Its very interesting and made the drive to Hana a lot more educational! The narrator has a pleasing voice. Our tactic made the app not as useful as its intention, we decided to drive full on through everything to get to the gulch and the sacred pools as early as possible to avoid crowds and tired legs for the big hike to the waterfall and then turn around and stop along the way back. This GPS based guided tour is fantastic. It seriously is like having a local riding with you. If you hit the road at 7am and are satisfied with only seeing the top 5 locations on the road, it gets you going home at a reasonable hour. This so so much to see on this roadtrip that if you did it your self and stopped at every stop you thought would be cool, you'd have to spend two days on the road. Only thing that sucks is app must be open and the screen on. The road to Hana is a 4 hour each way trip that takes an entire day. This guide doesn't just tell you where you stop, and what's worth skipping but fills you in on history, legends, stories and little tidbits. All you need to do is make sure the GPS is on under your phones settings. Turn off your data (3g-4g) and WIFI if you wish and let George as we named him narrate your trip. As we approached Paia, George started his narration and added humor at times. It is not constant talking but as soon as you approach something worthwhile, George will let you know where to park, what to see and what to pass, and where to even buy food before and as you approach. This was spot on! Literally I would come around a curve and George would let me know I have a sight coming up and there it was! Takes you all the way to the 7 sacred pools in the Haleakala National Park if you want to go that far. Wife and I loved it and it really seemed to make the trip less tense...not that it's that bad. He even narrates the history of Hawaii on the way back and points out several sights that you may have missed. $5 well spent! BTW...make sure your phone is plugged into a car charger and either pair your phone with the car's bluetooth or buy a cheap audio cable to plug in the (AUX) jack of your car and the other end to the headphone jack of phone...my choice.<br /><br /><span style="color:red">Thierry Schellenbach:</span> love it Its just like having a guide in your car. It tells you where to stap, what to see and a nice history about Maui. As there are no signs along the road to hana its a must have. Also cheaper than the regular audio guides available at gas stations. Can't recommend highly enough. Be sure to listen on the way back as well -- he gives a history of Hawaii. Some extra tips: -- Download ahead of time! -- Might be worth it to pack a swimsuit -- Pack bugspray! Some of the caves/etc. have a TON of mosquitos. -- He says it'll be 3 hours to Hana, but we found it was closer to 5 (and didn't even go to the end of the tour)<br /><br /><span style="color:red">Mikhail Simin:</span> Meh. While it's fun to listen to a voice randomly starting to talk the guide tells to you skip some of the best stops. Some of the "must see" stops are also unimpressive. It's good for telling you where you are on the road, but I'd recommend getting the Maui Revealed book and deciding yourself what interests you. The speaker in this app is biased. Not worth the $.<br /><br /><span style="color:red">Tom Barker:</span> Fantastic So glad our hotel receptionist mentioned this as we were about to leave the hotel. Very accurate, lots of information, but also gives a sense of security and feels just like you're travelling with a local. When you're on the road, there isn't much signal to use Google maps. This guide is great in that it can find your location without using your data. It also gives you a heads up when to turn and what to see. If you wish to skip the site, you can cancel the audio for that and keep driving. The audio tour also gives you a good history of places and advice for hikes.
